ActivitiesNotice: We are thrilled to have famous author Cheri Register attend Camp China 2006. She is the author of Are those kids yours? and her new book, Beyond Good Intentions. In these boldly written essays, Cheri, the mother of two adult daughters adopted as infants from Korea, questions the conventional wisdom about raising internationally adopted children. She calls attention to ten choices well-meaning parents make that turn out not to serve their children's needs as well as one might expect. She calls for frank and intimate conversations about the distinct challenges of raising children adopted across national, cultural, and often, racial boundaries. Visit her Web site at www.cheriregister.com. Families arrive Friday evening for the annual bonfire, if possible, where they roast marshmallows and play games. Children attend sessions on Saturday and Sunday mornings where they have fun participating in activities such as dancing and singing, creating works of art, and playing games such as Chinese jump rope and Chinese Yo Yo.
In the past, children and families have created family dragons and held them up during the last day's parade. Children have participated in the play, Mulan, acting out soldiers and emporers. Many of the activities center around crafts, such as character writing, writing calligraphy on umbrellas (shown below), and painting.
